Gulmarg — literally "meadow of flowers" — is Kashmir at its most cinematic. In summer it's a vast green bowl ringed by peaks; in winter it transforms into one of Asia's most celebrated ski destinations. At around 2,650 metres, just a couple of hours from Srinagar, it's a must on almost every Kashmir itinerary.
The Gondola
Gulmarg's headline experience is the Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world. It climbs in two stages — first to Kongdoori, then up toward Apharwat Peak at nearly 4,000 metres, where snow lingers even in summer. The views across the Pir Panjal range are extraordinary; go early, and book ahead in peak season, as tickets are limited and queues build fast.
Summer in Gulmarg
From May to September, Gulmarg is a green playground: gentle meadow walks, pony rides, one of the world's highest golf courses, and crisp mountain air that's a relief from the plains. It's family-friendly and endlessly photogenic — an easy day trip or a relaxed overnight.
Winter and skiing
From December, Gulmarg becomes a serious snow destination, drawing skiers and snowboarders from around the world for its deep powder and long off-piste runs. Even non-skiers come for the spectacle: sledging, snow play, and the Gondola gliding over a white wilderness. Conditions and access vary with weather, so winter trips need a little flexibility.
- Go early for the Gondola — beat the queues and the cloud.
- Layer up — it's cold at the top in any season.
- Book ahead in peak summer and ski season — Gulmarg fills up.
Gulmarg is the rare place that's worth visiting twice — once for the green meadows of summer, and once for the deep snow of winter. They feel like two different worlds.
