If Gulmarg is Kashmir's drama, Pahalgam is its calm. Set where the Lidder river rushes down from the high mountains, this riverside town is a base for some of the valley's most beautiful meadows and finest treks — and a place travellers tend to wish they'd given more time.
The Lidder valley
Pahalgam sits in the Lidder valley, and the river is its heartbeat — clear, cold and fast, lined with pine forests and pony trails. Simply walking along the Lidder, or sitting beside it with the mountains rising on every side, is reason enough to come.
Betaab and Aru valleys
Two short drives from town lead to Pahalgam's showpieces. Betaab Valley — named after the Bollywood film shot there — is a lush, mountain-ringed meadow split by the river. Aru Valley, a little further, is quieter and even more beautiful, a trailhead for treks and a place to slow right down. Both are unmissable.
Trekking from Pahalgam
Pahalgam is one of Kashmir's great trekking gateways. From easy meadow walks to multi-day routes toward the Kolahoi glacier and beyond, the surrounding mountains open up a world for hikers. It's also the traditional starting point for the Amarnath pilgrimage via Chandanwari.
- Day trips: Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari.
- Slow down: Pahalgam rewards an extra night more than most stops.
- For trekkers: some of Kashmir's best routes start right here.
Travellers come to Pahalgam for a day and leave wishing they'd stayed three. Build in the time — the valleys here are made for lingering.
