Five days is the trip most working people can actually get away for, and it is plenty for a first taste of Kashmir if you plan it tight. This Kashmir 5 day itinerary sticks to the proven triangle of Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, skips the long detours, and keeps the driving honest. You will not see everything. You will see the best of it, and leave wanting to come back.
Who a five-day trip suits
A short Kashmir trip works best for couples, small groups and anyone squeezing the valley into a long weekend plus a day or two. It is also a sensible first visit: you cover the signature places, learn how the roads feel, and figure out what you would give more time to next round. What it does not suit is a maximalist who wants Sonamarg, Gurez and a trek bolted on. For that, stretch to seven. If you are weighing the two, our 7-day Kashmir itinerary shows exactly what the extra two days buy you.
The Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam triangle
Three points, each a different face of Kashmir. Srinagar gives you the lake, the gardens and the old city. Gulmarg is the meadow and the mountain, reached by the Gondola cable car. Pahalgam is pine valleys and the Lidder river. They sit close enough that you can base in Srinagar and day-trip, or sleep a night out in Pahalgam. The season decides a lot: read the best time to visit Kashmir first so you know whether you are chasing tulips, green meadows or snow.
Day 1: Srinagar and a shikara evening
Land, transfer in (the airport is about 15 kilometres out, 30 to 45 minutes to the city), and keep the day soft. Lunch, then the Mughal gardens if you have energy, and a sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake to close it out. Shikara rates run around ₹600 to ₹800 an hour per boat as of 2026, so confirm at the ghat. A houseboat night is a lovely way to start if it fits the budget.
Day 2: Gulmarg day trip
Gulmarg is roughly 50 kilometres away, about two hours, with a vehicle change above Tangmarg in deep snow. The Gondola is the main event: Phase 1 to Kongdori, Phase 2 toward Apharwat. Budget roughly ₹800 to ₹1,100 per person per phase for 2026 and expect that to change, so check current rates and book early in season. Add a meadow walk or a pony ride and head back to Srinagar for the night. Our Gulmarg travel guide has the detail if you want to go deeper here.
Day 3: Pahalgam
Drive to Pahalgam, about 90 kilometres and three to four hours with stops at Awantipora and the saffron belt near Pampore. Settle in, walk the Lidder, and if there is time, do Betab Valley by the local taxi union cab. The valleys circuit (Aru, Betab, Chandanwari) is a fixed-rate local run, commonly ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 for the set as of 2026, so confirm the tariff. One night in Pahalgam beats a day trip; the town is at its best early and late when the day-trippers have gone.
Day 4: Gardens, or a Sonamarg choice
Drive back toward Srinagar. You have a fork here. Option one: take the gardens and old city at a relaxed pace, shop a little, and enjoy a final lake evening. Option two: if you skipped meadows and crave them, swap this day for a long Sonamarg run (about 80 kilometres, two and a half to three hours each way) and do Thajiwas glacier. You cannot do both well in five days, so pick the one that matches what you came for.
Our honest take: on a five-day trip, choose the gardens-and-lake day over Sonamarg unless meadows are the whole reason you came. Sonamarg is a big drive for a short window, and rushing it sours the day.
Day 5: Departure and last buys
Keep it loose around your flight. A morning is enough for Pashmina, saffron, dried fruit or walnut-wood carving. Buy from a proper shop, take a bill, and reach the airport about two hours early for the security layers.
Why Sonamarg is optional on five days
Sonamarg is wonderful, and it is also the stop that quietly breaks a tight schedule. The round trip eats most of a day, the weather turns by afternoon, and if you tack it on after Pahalgam you spend your trip in the car. On seven days it slots in beautifully. On five, it is a straight trade against the gardens, the old city and a calmer pace. There is no wrong answer, only the one that fits your group.
Pacing and driving times at a glance
Keep these rough 2026 figures in mind and confirm locally, since roadworks and weather change them:
- Airport to Srinagar city: 15 km, about 30 to 45 minutes.
- Srinagar to Gulmarg: around 50 km, about 2 hours.
- Srinagar to Pahalgam: around 90 km, 3 to 4 hours with stops.
- Srinagar to Sonamarg: around 80 km, 2.5 to 3 hours.
The lesson in those numbers: do not plan two mountain towns in one day. One big drive a day is the right ceiling for a relaxed trip.
A rough cost guide
Treat these as broad 2026 ranges and confirm with your operator. A private cab for five days, covering the Gulmarg and Pahalgam running, commonly lands around ₹13,000 to ₹22,000 depending on vehicle and route. Mid-range stays run roughly ₹2,500 to ₹6,000 a night. Add the Gondola, shikara, valley cabs, ponies and meals at ₹300 to ₹600 a head, and a comfortable five-day trip for two comes together in a sensible band once flights are added. Peak season lifts everything.
The bottom line
Five days in Kashmir is not a compromise if you plan it with discipline: two faces of the valley, one big drive a day, and a clear choice between the gardens and Sonamarg. Keep a buffer, book the Gondola early, and resist the urge to cram. When you are ready for more, our Pahalgam travel guide is a good next read for the valley you will probably wish you had given another night.
